SUMMARY:2-Day Plein Air Workshop w/Wyatt Waters
DESCRIPTION:TWO DAY PLEIN AIR \nWATERCOLOR WORKSHOP \nw/Wyatt Waters\nApril 2 & 3 • 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM\nCOST: $ 465.00 Members / $480.00 Non-members\nRegistration for Members Only Feb 2 – 15\nRegistration for General Public begins Feb. 16\n(In person\, phone\, or online registration)\nThe focus of Wyatt’s workshop is about learning to see and painting outside en plein air with watercolor. The emphasis is as much on seeing as painting. \nWyatt will speak and demonstrate the problems associated with working on location while providing practical solutions and advice\, based on his 40+ years of experience. Wyatt shares his philosophy of life that is intrinsically tied to his painting. The workshop deals with how painting can inform life\, as well as the other way around. The emphasis is on getting the attendees in touch with their own seeing. He encourages not just the painting of what is seen\, but also their felt expression that can give their own art meaning. \nWhat to expect with plein air painting: Painting en plein air asks you to step outside the comfort of the studio and respond to the world as it truly is — moving\, changing\, unpredictable\, and wonderfully alive. You can expect shifting light\, unexpected breezes\, curious passersby\, and a pace that feels faster than you’d like. It can be challenging. It can even feel overwhelming at first. But that is exactly what makes it so valuable. Working outdoors sharpens your ability to see quickly and clearly. It forces you to simplify\, to make decisions with confidence\, and to trust your instincts. Instead of getting lost in details\, you learn to capture the essence of a scene—its shape\, light\, and energy—before it slips away. This clarity and decisiveness carry back with you to every painting you do\, indoors or out. \nThe “struggle” is part of the process. Every moment of discomfort—whether it’s the changing shadows\, the complexity of nature\, or the pressure of limited time—teaches you something essential about painting. Plein air work builds resilience\, speed\, and a deeper connection to your subject. And when it all comes together\, you end up with paintings that feel fresh\, immediate\, and full of life. \nIn the end\, plein air painting isn’t just about working outside. It’s about learning to trust yourself\, becoming more responsive to the world around you\, and finding joy in the unexpected. The struggle is worth it because it makes you a stronger\, more intuitive artist—and it brings out a vitality in your work that simply can’t be found any other way. \nMinimum number of students: 10\nMaximum numbers of students: 17 \nSchedule:\nEach day runs approximately 9am to 4pm with a 45-minute lunch break.\nThe morning session will be an overview of the day’s topic and demonstration painting.\nThe afternoon session consists of a group paint\, applying the morning’s teaching to their own painting and individual instruction\, as needed. Each day will end with a group critique of what worked and area of improvement. \nDay One: Values and Speed of Painting\nMorning Session\nWyatt begins with a demonstration using a watercolor drawing in ivory black on sketch paper. This exercise strengthens value control\, speeds up decision-making\, and keeps artists connected to the fluid nature of watercolor. He then transitions into a full painting of the subject\, showing how to apply the established values directly into color.\nAfternoon Session\nParticipants create their own watercolor drawings and paintings. Wyatt moves through the group\, discussing each artist’s work\, offering guidance\, and answering questions as they paint.\nEnd-of-Day Review\nThe group gathers to reflect on their work\, sharing what went well and identifying areas for improvement. \nDay Two: Incorporating People into Your Painting\nMorning Session\nWyatt demonstrates how to paint quick studies of groups of people\, showing how these figures bring life and movement to a composition. This is followed by a full start-to-finish watercolor demonstration in which he incorporates people sketches into a complete painting.\nAfternoon Session\nAttendees work on their own people studies and integrate them into their paintings. Wyatt circulates among the group offering individual guidance\, then brings everyone together to walk through concepts and techniques as a whole.\nEnd-of-Day Wrap-Up\nThe group gathers for final Q&A and critique. Wyatt offers feedback and provides suggestions for how participants can continue developing their paintings beyond the workshop. \nRain Day Schedule  – TBD \n Full Materials List  \nI WANT TO TAKE THIS CLASS

SUMMARY:Photography Exhibit Showcases: “Scotland 2025” and “Other Occasional Miracles” by Vernon and Deni Martin
DESCRIPTION:By Amy Nichols \nThe public is invited to experience the captivating photography of Vernon and Deni Martin at their upcoming exhibit\, running from March 6 to March 31\, 2026\, at the Plateau Creative Arts Center. The show opens with the “Gallery First Friday” reception on March 6\, from 5–7 PM\, offering guests a first look at two distinct collections that celebrate the beauty of both distant landscapes and familiar surroundings. \nThe-Quairaing-at-Dawn \nScotland 2025 presents a series of photographs captured during the artists’ month-long journey through Scotland in April 2025. Visitors will discover a vibrant snapshot of the country’s architectural heritage\, breathtaking landscapes\, lively streetscapes\, and everyday activities—all seen through the eyes of two Americans exploring Scotland for the first time. This collection promises something for every interest\, inviting viewers to see Scotland from fresh perspectives. \nPerseverance of a Butterfly \n  \nOther Occasional Miracles features their favorite images from 2025 and 2026\, ranging from the artists’ own backyard and the Cumberland Plateau to travels in Michigan. These photographs reflect the Martins’ passion for capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary\, whether it’s local wildlife\, sweeping vistas\, or moments of everyday life. \nAbout the Artists\nVernon and Deni Martin are amateur photographers who relocated to the Crossville area in 2022. With backgrounds in Michigan and Nashville\, they bring diverse interests to their work—architectural\, historical\, documentary\, street\, landscape\, and nature photography for Vernon\, and birds\, wildlife\, and the natural world for Deni. Their styles differ\, with Deni’s intentional and thoughtful approach complementing Vernon’s instinctive and opportunistic eye. Influences include wildlife photographer Simon d’Entremont\, landscape photographers Mads Peter Iversen\, Ian Worth\, Joe Cornish\, and street photographer Vivian Mayer. \nThe Martins believe that every photograph offers a new view of the ordinary and familiar\, giving viewers a chance to see places they may never have visited and to appreciate the familiar in new ways. Their work is a testament to the power of photography to capture moments\, evoke emotion\, and occasionally deliver miracles. They are grateful for the opportunity to share their images and stories with the community. \nQ&A with the Artists \nWhat advice would you give to aspiring photographers? \nDeni Martin – Be patient to see what is there\, then capture the moment. \nVernon Martin – Take pictures of what you find interesting\, Take lots of pictures. At first everything\, everywhere all the time. Educate yourself about your camera and the basic rules of composition. It will make you a better photographer and better able to catch the moment when it arises. \nPersevere and you will progress. Remember that “everything is difficult until it gets easy.” Not every picture will be a winner but keep taking pictures and the miracle shots will come more often. \nGallery First Friday is March 6\, 2026 \nCelebrate creativity with us at the Gallery First Friday on March 6\, from 5 to 7 PM! Discover the captivating photography of Vernon and Deni Martin as they take you on a visual journey through the landscapes of Scotland and the beauty found close to home. SUMMARY:Life Drawing w/ Dena Whitener
DESCRIPTION:4th Wednesday of every month • 12:00 – 2:00 PM\nat the Plateau Creative Arts Center\nArt Guild Member $5.00 • Non-Member $10.00\nFee is due before the start of the session. \nFor artists who want to improve their drawing skills\, life drawing is one of the best ways to accomplish that. It improves hand-eye coordination greatly and really gets the right side of the brain active. Life drawing sessions at the Arts Center are not a class\, everyone works independently. A different model is provided each month. Many of the participants focus on portraiture while others want to compose a drawing of the entire figure. If an artist would like help with their drawing\, Dena or another artist is happy to provide assistance. “Life drawing sessions are very supportive and we learn from one another. It’s a good time!” \nThe Plateau Creative Arts Center/Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 organization and an equal opportunity provider.
