Gallery Opening Night Celebrates the Artistry of Glass Painting
By Amy Nichols
Join us Friday, August 1, from 5–7 PM at the Plateau Creative Arts Center at 451 Lakeview Drive for a vibrant evening of creativity, connection, and community. Enjoy light refreshments—including wine and non-alcoholic beverages—while mingling with local artists and exploring the luminous world of glass painting. This month’s featured artist is Robert “Bob” Stevens, whose radiant glasswork will be showcased alongside pieces by the emerging artists he has mentored. Admission is free and open to the public.
Artistry on Glass
The August exhibition honors both the artistic mastery and generous spirit of Bob Stevens. Known for transforming everyday glass into breathtaking works of art, Bob brings intricate detail and vivid color to every piece he creates. But beyond his own work, Bob is celebrated for his role as a mentor. Over the years, he has guided dozens of aspiring artists, many of whom credit him with sparking their creative journey. “Bob is a very patient teacher,” shares one participant. Another adds, “The only way to mess it up is if you’re not having fun.”
The Joy of Painting on Glass
For many, painting on glass is more than an art form—it’s a calming, almost meditative experience. “There’s freedom in knowing you can scrape off a mistake and try again”, says one artist from the Monday Open Studio sessions. “It’s zen-like and incredibly rewarding.”
Upcoming Opportunities to Create
Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, Bob’s upcoming classes offer a welcoming space to explore this unique medium:
August 5 – Smorgasbord: Paint on a Bottle.
August 13 – September 17, 5-Session Workshop – Paint on Glass
Q&A with the Artist
Q: How did you start painting on glass?
A little before COVID, we were replacing windows in our home. My wife, who repurposes everything, suggested I try painting on them.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your art?
That’s a hard question. I just love making art—whether it’s oil, acrylic, watercolor, or glass. Billie Faye Brannon asked me to teach a class, and I’ve enjoyed it so much I’ll keep teaching as long as people are interested.
Q: What advice would you give to someone curious about painting on glass?
It’s a fun medium that anyone can enjoy—whether you’re a serious artist or have never painted before. Just be warned: it can be very addictive!
Q: What do you enjoy most about Open Studio?
The sharing. Artists come together to exchange ideas and solve problems. I especially love when artists from other mediums bring in knowledge I haven’t encountered before.
