Mount Ranier

For 20 years, she worked as a floral designer at her family’s floral business. She also owned and operated a dance studio, teaching dance in Vandalia for over 35 years. In 2004, Rene’ and her husband discovered the inviting community of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, and purchased a house. In 2013, they moved to the Big Lick area of Cumberland County. It was while attending a “Fun & Wine Friday” event held at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, that Rene` was inspired to start painting again! While she loves working with acrylics, she’s also rekindling her passion for watercolors and has experience with textiles and art glass. Rene` joined the Art Guild in 2022 and enjoys working with all the wonderful artists and volunteers.

5 Questions for the Artist

1. Can you tell us about your journey as an artist? How did it all begin? I’ve painted and worked with textiles my entire life. Recently I’ve started working with wood and resin ranging from small sculptures to tables.

2. What materials and techniques do you prefer to use? I prefer acrylics for painting. For my wood sculptures I let the piece lead me into the project. My tables start with locally sourced trees that we take down and mill into slabs.

3. What themes or messages do you aim to convey through your art?  Sometimes it&’s peace and serenity, other times I like my art to be thought provoking.

4. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement in your career? About a year ago the Art Guild had a found objects theme.  That started my passion for sculpturing with wood and resin and wherever the piece leads me.

5. What advice would you give to aspiring artists about finding their unique style?  Always challenge yourself with something new.
